Ideas:

Idea One:

My first idea is to make a drink driving awareness advert. I looked into awareness videos as part of my previous project and found the content very harrowing. My advert would be based around having a choice and follow the choice of getting a lift home vs driving drunk. However with this idea I feel as though I might struggle successfully filming a crash and I could face quite a few risks.

Idea Two:

My second idea is to do an adaptation of scene in a book however I didn't fully develop this idea because I immediately found issues with it. For example I felt I couldn't pick a part of a book that would make sense on it's own especially because I typically read thriller crime books. Also I wouldn't be able to find actors who could accurately portray the characters from the books I read.

Idea Three:

For my third idea is for a short thriller in which two people are trapped inside their house with the suspicion that someone is outside trying to get in. This idea was inspired by the opening scene from Scream (Craven, 1996). I really like this idea as I haven't really explored this theme in my previous work however I think I will find it challenging effectively create the emotions and atmosphere I would want my audience to feel.

Proposal:

Rationale:

Before starting this course I had no real prior knowledge of the world of media. From starting this year I have learnt the theory behind film, how to effectively create a piece of media and how to use the equipment. With each new project I have improved my knowledge and skill which can be effectively seen through my end products. For example I believe there has been a vast improvement with the quality of my camera work. I would now really like to apply what I have learnt to a media I haven't explored yet, with the sole intention of creating a desired atmosphere.

Project Concept:

For my project I'm going to create a short thriller with the narrative of my character being trapped in their house by the fear and suspicion that someone is outside. My whole aim with this project is to apply micro elements such as mise en scene and sound to create my desired atmosphere. To adapt my learning to this project which differs vastly from my previous ones I will analyse scenes from films or T.V shows which create similar atmosphere and determine how they created the effect. I will also film test shots using different lighting and hold a focus group determining what atmosphere each different lighting gives the members of my focus group.

I think the shoot will be more complex than anything I've filmed before because I'm hoping to film at night which means I will have complete control lighting however I usually depend on the natural light. This means I will also have to borrow lights and will have to plan how they are used. My project will be a five minute narrative short in the genre of thriller horror.

Evaluation:

Throughout my project I will be keeping a diary which will accurately document my work on the project this will help me to keep track of my progress. Also by keeping a dairy of my decision making process I will be able to effectively evaluate my project.

Time Plan:

As it was weakness I identified in my previous project I took care to plan how I would use my time effectively. This time plan can be vague so I also intend to make a checklist for each week ensuring I complete my work within a suitable time scale.

Proposed Research:

I intend to use both primary and secondary to help me further my knowledge on narrative work and also the genre thriller/horror. I'm planning on conducting focus groups which will help me understand a potential target audiences opinion. I also plan to look into similar scenes from film or t.v to understand how they create a certain atmosphere. Furthermore I will also look into narrative theory because it will aid me to make the story side of my project better.
